The $10,000 no-limit hold’em tournament attracted 208 players, and after the first six levels of play, just 106 remained in the hunt for the first-place prize worth $739,486. Dwyte Pilgrim has started 2010 on a hot streak, and day 1 of this tournament was no different. Pilgrim paces the field with a chip stack of 175,000. Pilgrim is currently in fourth place in the Card Player Player of the Year standings, brought to you by Bodog, and he could increase his point total by making his fourth final table at the Southern Poker Championship in the WPT championship event. Pilgrim won a $500 no-limit hold’em preliminary on Jan. 9, and scored his second win of the year in a $300 no-limit hold’em deep stack preliminary on Jan. 13. He continued his hot streak on the Gulf Coast by finishing runner-up in a $1,000 no-limit hold’em preliminary on Jan. 16. Pilgrim has won $125,733 in prize money and picked up 1,560 points thanks to his impressive run in Biloxi. He is the only poker player to win two poker tournaments thus far in the New Year. Joining Pilgrim at the top of the chip counts at the end of day 1 are Jonathan Little (152,100) and Hoyt Corkins (115,000). Another early front-runner in the 2010 POY race, Gavin Smith (85,000), has survived day 1 in good shape. Smith has made two final tables to kick off 2010, and he currently holds 1,392 POY points, which is good for sixth place overall. There are three more days left in the WPT event, and the top 18 players will make the money.
